Monthly Teen Mag Roundup

Missing Miley since her Twitter departure? Say no more. Teen Vogue brings the outspoken soon-to-be former “Hannah Montana” star back as a lady in red for the April cover. Inside, she does what she does best and talks a blue streak about her upcoming Nicholas Sparks film “Last Song” among other topics with on and off-screen love interest Australian newcomer Liam Hemsworth. One notable quotable comes in response to the classic “who would you be” game. Out of the four “Sex and the City” characters, Miley (who has a cameo in the upcoming SATC sequel) says, “I know everyone says Carrie, but I love Kim Cattrall, so I’ll say Samantha. I want to be her because she’s the hottest, she’s funny, and she has attitude.”
And speaking of Carrie and friends.. this month the mag features an exclusive excerpt from the upcoming SATC prequel The Carrie Diaries, a YA reboot of the series that lands the Manolo Queen back in her small-town high school wearing “white patent leather” cracked go-go boots among other utterly 80s staples. Wondering whether today’s couture-savvy teen readers will still relate to the sharp-witted heroine stripped of all her modern designer labels and *ahem* experience? So do we (as do the ladies at Jezebel).
Tackling a topic their cover girl knows a little something about, this month Teen Vogue features a piece on “Facebook Narcissism” and the warning signs that social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter may be consuming too much of your time and emotional energy. The piece cites the work of UCSD psychologist Jean Twenge, who commissioned research from Ypulse, along with suggestions for creating a balance between time spent “hanging out” online and offline. It also cites a few helpful hints on knowing the meaning of TMI.
On the cover of Seventeen this month we have Nina Dobrev, rising star of The CW’s “Vampire Diaries” (see YAB member Caro’s review here). As promised in the teaser tagline, the former “Degrassi” cast mate expands on a slightly different dating policy than our girl Miley, explaining why she won’t be dating either of her co-stars anytime soon… or any other high-profile celebs for that matter: “I think it could definitely get sticky if you dated your co-star. To be completely honest, dating an actor is very complicated. There’s a lot of vanity involved. And they’re in their head, and they’re kind of crazy. And you’re always surrounded by beautiful people. I would prefer not to date an actor.” Meanwhile, “Vampire Diaries” fans are given plenty of crushing material with an in-depth interview with Paul Wesley.
Oy was my first reaction to the headline “My Mom Hooks Up With Guys MY Age!” followed quickly by head shaking at the “Cougar Moms” label applied to the sample profiled in the accompanying feature. On the bright side, the piece itself isn’t as sensational as it sounds and actually takes a pretty levelheaded examination of whether Moms dating younger guys is “cringeworthy” or “cool,” and why communication on the issue matters. Still have to hope there aren’t any TV execs out there getting ideas for reality shows that resemble a non-spoof version of the MILF Island bit from “30 Rock.”
Finally in less divisive topics we get a crop of articles for “The Hair Issue” featuring tips on how to make it shiny, soft and mega-long, what looks best with your face shape and my personal favorite “DIY recipes to boost your locks.” That’s right super foods to make your hair look its best. Could make an interesting theme for a dinner party, no?
