Gaming Could Use a Shot of Estrogen
Posted by anastasia on 09-09-2004The Associated Press reports on the increasing numbers of women getting into the gaming biz, many attending Southern Methodist University's Guildhall school of video game making, and how the shoot em' up, scantily clad, buxom realm might change as a result. There is also the the first Women's Game Conference, in Austin on Thursday and Friday. From the article:
"Ismini Roby, co-founder of WomenGamers.com, said there's a stereotype that women are interested only in simple puzzles or card games.
"We don't all like pink, and we don't all like the same types of games," she said. "The reality is that women like a variety of genres. Saying differently is like saying all men like science fiction movies."
"The Sims" and "Myst," featuring a mix of social experimentation and archaeological detective work, are among the most popular games ever, largely because of their broad appeal with both sexes."
My friend who works on The Sims over at EA told me the game is hugely popular with teen girls. It's funny — I remember when there was a big push for "games for girls" back in the lates eighties with Purple Moon software and other games that just seemed too girley. I think games that appeal to both sexes are really the way to go.
