Eating Disorder Awareness Week
Posted by alli on 02-27-2008
The term "eating disorder" encompasses a range of illnesses that continues to affect many young people today. With stick-thin celebrities as role models, and an ever growing diet-culture, kids are starting to worry about their weight and appearance at younger and younger ages.
This week is Eating Disorder Awareness Week, and in an attempt to increase sensitivity, we're offering some YA titles on the subject:
- Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia by Marya Hornbacher
- Starving: A Personal Journey Through Anorexia by Christie Pettit
- Empty: A Story of Anorexia by Christie Pettit
- The Anorexia Diaries: A Mother and Daughter's Triumph over Teenage Eating Disorders by Linda Rio
- Diary of an Anorexic Girl by Morgan Menzie
Do you have some YA favorites on this subject? If so, post them in the comments.
Another way to draw attention to the cause is to put away all your fashion and entertainment magazines. I know, I know. I read them too, but let's face it, they often make us feel bad…there I said it.
Visit NEDA's website for more information and related events in your area.

Great books all! I like these as well, though some people might not get why they are great for eating disorders:
Reviving Ophelia - Pipher
Addictions - A Banquet in the Grave - Welch
