Dove’s Hollywood Hair

Posted by anastasia on 08-23-2007

Dove is at it again — this time taking “Hollywood hair” to task in another short video and promotional stunt that included “Heroes’” star Ali Larter doing her own hair for the Emmy’s [gasp!]. The message is for girls and women to love their hair and to “start loving the hair they have and not compare it to the unattainable images they see in the media and Hollywood.” I think the video feels a little too much like they’re trying to repeat the success of “Evolution” (and it doesn’t seem like it has). Plus Dove still has to wrestle with the contradiction that it’s selling products for you to use on your hair. I guess Ali was at a Girl Scouts self esteem event along with Gretchen Monahan, “trendsetter, celebrity stylist and contributor to the ‘Rachael Ray’ show.” Gretchen was “on hand to share hair care tips and styling techniques to help the girls feel more beautiful and confident every day. Everyone can make their hair look its best with the right tools and techniques.”

I guess when I think about girls’ and women’s issues with our hair, they tend to go a little deeper. Brunettes want to be blond. Why? African American or Jewish girls with super curly hair want to straighten it. Why? Some women are afraid to cut their hair short because it makes them look like boys. To me, these are much more interesting questions and issues than knowing how much goes into an Emmy hairdo. What do you think?
