Crash

Posted by anastasia on 10-05-2005

So I was having a drink with a Ypulse reader at my hotel last night, and we were talking about celeb publicists, which led to a short discussion of Lindsay Lohan. I loved "Mean Girls" and was really excited by Lindsay's on-screen promise but began to sour with the increasing number of tabloid exploits and coverage of her Paris-like partying antics. The Ypulse reader I was with also thought Lindsay was great in movies and added that she feels a little sorry for her, as do I, because of all the family b.s. she's had to deal with in the midst of just trying to grapple with her new fame and fortune. Hey, it's tough coming from a disfunctional family and it's even tougher when you're in the spotlight I guess.

But my take is that she is dangerously close to Tara Reid/Paris Hilton territory where she will only be known for what's written about in gossip columns (ok, Paris has a book, jewelry, sex tapes, etc.) and not so much for her acting career.

So when I read the headline today that Lindsay crashed after being swarmed and chased by the paparazzi, I felt slightly guilty and then just thought about how these young stars are managed and wondered if her publicist was helping her cultivate her party girl image or begging her to cut it out. It seems like there are a few images these young female stars can cultivate:

Good girl (Mandy, Hilary)
Party girl (Lindsay)
Slutty party girl (Tara, Paris)
Serious actor girl (Scarlett, Reese, etc…add your own to these lists)

If I were Lindsay's publicist, I would be pushing her towards the serious actor girl, although it might be too late…

Where would classify Madonna through her different stages in her career?

Interesting question. Madonna was pretty much a bad girl through most of the 80s but seemed very much to be in control of her own image. She also came across much smarter than Paris, Lindsay or most of the young pop stars do today. She had street smarts, understood subcultures and it showed. No matter what people thought of her antics, it seemed like they respected her business sense. She became more of a good girl with Ray of Light and then a wife and mother who could still make serious dance music.
