Coming This Fall…. ‘DARE’
Posted by meredith on 07-30-2009
This year at the Ypulse Youth Marketing Mashup, we had the pleasure of hosting an exclusive screening of the indie high school drama “DARE” starring Emmy Rossum and Zach Gilford (a.k.a. Matt Saracen/QB1 from “Friday Night Lights”). As a no-holds-barred look at the confusing intensity that is adolescence, it was easy to see why the film caught the attention of the crowd at Sundance. Definitely one of the braver portrayal of teens out there.
As such, I wanted to call attention to the very exciting news reported in Variety yesterday that the film has been acquired by Image Entertainment and will start its limited release in theaters Nov. 13.
I wouldn’t call it the most comfortable co-viewing experience for teens and parents (one rated-R scene springs to mind that would be especially cringeworthy), but it has the potential to offer some insight on both sides of what it means to be growing up today. In the press release, Garrett M. Lee, Image’s Senior Vice President, says “Audiences will identify with this 21st-century update of the John Hughes oeuvre,” but I think screenwriter David Brind summed it up best back in our interview in April:
“I wanted to write a story that reflects the sophistication of teens in the internet age, where knowledge and information are easily accessible. I think this has allowed high schoolers to be more self-aware – they can read about the stresses of adolescence online, get a sense of how they are seen by the “experts” in psychology or education, by the marketing gods, by parents at large. This has created a generation of teens that are more psychologically astute, yet still completely enmeshed in the drama and pathos of everyday high school life. I wanted to treat the teen characters with a lot of respect, as three dimensional, conflicted and complex individuals.”
Read the rest of the interview to hear more from Brind and director Adam Salky on creating “a realistic high school movie” with a youth audience in mind. And be sure check out “DARE” next fall.
