College Students Love Debit Cards, Fantasy Leagues and ‘The Chapelle Show’
Posted by anastasia on 11-24-2004So I’ve been getting this newsletter from the Student Monitor called Campus Trends that has some pretty good stats on what college kids are into these days. Here’s my high level summary of the newsletter:
Last spring “The Chapelle Show” was number five with co-eds; the last season of “Friends” was number one.
Debit cards on their way to becoming ubiquitous (I thought they were already) 68 percent of college students own debit cards (more than own credit cards and way up from five years ago when just 43 percent owned a debit card)
Fantasy Sports is becoming yet another great distraction – 7 percent, or some 250,000 male undergrads participated in a fantasy baseball league this year. As a sign for what’s in store, 20 percent or some 600,000 of these young men said fantasy sports leagues were “in” on their campus.
Here are the current top brands among co-eds (smells like “value” and/or “cheap” are the key factors here):
Top Vehicle Make Owned: Ford
Top Auto Insurance Company: State Farm
Top Laptop Brand Owned: Dell
Top Cell Phone Brand Owned: Nokia
Top Specialty Clothing Retailer: Old Navy
And of course the “must have” holiday gifts for college men and women (they will be buying their gifts online):
The “must have” holiday gifts among young men are:
- an iPod
- Nintendo DS
- a notebook computer
- cash
And the “must have gifts” among the young women are:
- a notebook computer
- a Coach bag
- an iPod
- a digital camera
- clothes
