Coeds Slacking, Full of Cereal & High Expectations
Posted by anastasia on 11-15-2004I spotted three recent articles about the current state of the college student: The first was in the New York Times (registration required) this weekend and basically says college students are shunning the low-carb trend by eating more cereal than ever (read the article for the stats and chart - Cheerios is students' cereal of choice) I guess the "freshman 15" just got a lot easier to put on.
The second story is from the Cox News Service and discusses the "quarterlife crisis" facing new grads today (long job hunts, lots of debt, high expectations). Not all twentysomethings are disillusioned, just realistic:
"John Allison, a 23-year-old senior at Georgia State University who expects to graduate in December, can't wait for life after college. He is looking forward to traveling, cooking, cycling and spending time with his girlfriend. He is not dreaming about a six-figure job but instead has more modest hopes of making $25,000."
Finally USA Today says college students are not hitting the books like they used to:
"A survey of 163,000 randomly sampled students at 473 colleges shows that only 28% of freshmen regularly make class presentations. That figure is higher for seniors (57%), but nearly a third of seniors (32%) say they rarely even ask questions in class or contribute to discussions."
The article has a slew of stats about today's student slackers.
