Chace Crawford Named ‘Hottest Bachelor’… But For Whom?

In response to People magazine naming “Gossip Girl” star Chace Crawford as “Summer’s Hottest Bachelor,” snarky fashion bloggers The Fug Girls tweeted:
“Dear People Mag: Chace Crawford may be hot, but being a single 23-year old doesn’t make him a hot BACHELOR. It makes him a dude.”
It made me think about the original implications of the title (hello marriage material!) and how this year’s tween-friendly choice really doesn’t fit in with the classic mom-friendly “bachelors” that have graced the cover in the past, i.e. George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matthew Mcconaughey, etc. Among the other “eligible” picks: ”Transformer’s” Shia LeBeouf (23), “The Hills’” Brody Jenner (25) and, yes, “Twilight’s” Robert Pattinson (23).
So, is picking boyish heartthrobs over a traditional “bachelor” type just a play for tween and teen attention now that there’s less competition from teen mags on the newsstands? Or can the younger choices also be chalked up to the push for, excuse the phrase, “Cougar” culture that’s happening in the media today (incidentally, the opening line of the piece does mention the affair Crawford’s character’s has with an older woman..)? And if that’s the case does that mean moms and daughters are supposed to… share celeb crushes?
While I can’t personally imagine sharing a famous romantic interest with my mom, maybe for today’s teens, who are increasingly close with their parents, it’s a bonding experience (think: “Twilight Moms”). Not that I see widespread family viewings of GG happening, but maybe “Footloose”? Ypulse readers?

There was a TV show about private detectives from 1960-1962 titled, “Surfside 6.”
The characters were described in the theme song as “young bachelors.”
Troy Donahue, the star, was 24 when the show started.
Therefore, referring to a man in his early 20s as a bachelor isn’t new.
