Back to School Foolishness
Posted by anastasia on 08-05-2004Now that it's August (not that you would know this in cold and foggy San Francisco), it's time for media and marketers to begin the annual "Back to School" orgy of promotions and pitches. A few advertising blogs already made fun of the fact that both Dell and Gateway accidentally used the same model in their ads. Oops! The Mall of America has put out a press release that tells us (shocker) 51% of teens feel like they will find everything they need for back to school at…you guessed it! Mall of America. Some of their other scientific findings include:
Fifty-nine percent of teens surveyed say they get their fashion ideas by making them up themselves. The latest is the "Do It Yourself" trend. This new movement allows teens to express their style and create clothing that is one-of-a-kind.
While 46.5 percent of teens surveyed said their parents finance their back-to-school shopping, 44 percent, say they will share this expense with their parents. Many of them (41 percent) will use a portion of their summer job earnings while spending on average between $51-$200.
And finally, Michelle Branch (remember Michelle?), the piano playing singer songwriter verging on "Where is she now?" status has joined with Kohls to offer a promotion where shoppers bring in puzzle pieces for a chance to win a private concert with Michelle at their school.
