Advergames Sneaking into Classrooms

Reuters posted a story this weekend about how ad filtering software in schools don’t block out advertisers’ more subtle attempts at reaching kids. The gist is that students will happen upon these sites during their downtime and encounter “‘immersive advertising’ or corporate-sponsored ‘advergames’ such as the Neopets Web site, which contains loads of embedded advertising messages and links to merchandise.” Not sure what the solution to this would be except to restrict Web access to only school approved sites, which sounds rather Draconian…
